Somebody Training

If you don’t already know who Ram Dass is, take a quick stroll through his life’s work. It’s quite the journey. He not only played a quintessential role in the counter culture of the 60’s but also had a profound affect on the baby boomers much later in life.

He is a hugely influential figure in my own spiritual journey and I’ve used his teachings not just to help shape my own concept of God but understand myself as well (Ram Dass would argue they are the same). In fact, as I listen to him speak I find I’m drawn to lean in hard. Maybe it just speaks to me in a way faith never has, maybe he’s just good with words, maybe it’s that a Harvard Professor with a PhD in psychiatry also believes in God and has dedicated his whole life to teaching others the mystical world that lives within our material world. Whatever it is, I find myself consciously pulling back from his teachings for no other reason than I want to truly shape my own spiritual path and you don’t do that by going all in on one guy.

He has an incredible way of conceptualizing the difference between the soul and the mind…the spirit and the ego. There is a segment I wanted to share where he gives a great analogy of this very concept. I hope you enjoy and let me know your thoughts in the comments. The analogy begins at the 13:30 mark but I recommend the entire episode.
