Defeat Addiction

It may seem odd to write about addiction on a website that advocates the use of psychedelics not only to heal the sick but as a tool to improve the lives of those who are already well. As someone who is in recovery myself from addiction, truly understanding the nature of addiction is important to finding a way out. You’ll hear a lot out there that psychedelics aren’t addictive and no one would ever repeatedly abuse a drug like that but you’re wrong. Anything can become an addiction, maybe not physically addictive but people can become addicted really to anything they receive a dopamine boost from (sex, drugs, gambling, the list goes on…). Understanding What Addiction Is You may view addiction very much the way I did before collapsing under my own; as an inescapable hole dug the moment the individual picked up the substance for the first time. My…

Somebody Training

If you don’t already know who Ram Dass is, take a quick stroll through his life’s work. It’s quite the journey. He not only played a quintessential role in the counter culture of the 60’s but also had a profound affect on the baby boomers much later in life. He is a hugely influential figure in my own spiritual journey and I’ve used his teachings not just to help shape my own concept of God but understand myself as well (Ram Dass would argue they are the same). In fact, as I listen to him speak I find I’m drawn to lean in hard. Maybe it just speaks to me in a way faith never has, maybe he’s just good with words, maybe it’s that a Harvard Professor with a PhD in psychiatry also believes in God and has dedicated his whole life to teaching others the mystical world that…

Love Yourself, Love Everyone

My first vacation with my family after opening up about my alcoholism and becoming part of the AA community was not what I expected. It wasn’t full of love. In fact, it was the complete opposite. I had dreamt up scenarios of how proud my mother would be of me, how my brothers and sisters would congratulate me on such an accomplishment, the small town of Duck in the Outer Banks where we vacation would have a ticker tape parade celebrating my return, my dad would see what I did and be inspired to do the same. None of that happened. No one even mentioned it. Not a word. Some of them actually looked at me like there was something wrong with me or that I had a considerable overreaction to what I considered abuse. So, as alcoholics do, my resentments started to grow. As the week wore on I…

My First Breathwork Workshop

How I found Witalij Martynow I have been learning meditation over the last few months and finally starting to see some results. I am very much a beginner but I have used a variety of techniques to slow my mind down and increase my overall awareness which has noticeably started to spill into work and personal life positively. In fact, it’s become a regular habit before a big meeting or a particularly contentious call for me to sit and meditate for 5 to 10 minutes to get my head straight and my nerves calm. It beats taking Xanax any day and arguably way more effective. So why not give breathwork a try. A good friend of mine who I have not seen in a few years contacted me last week and we reconnected. Now, this is one of my old drinking buddies and to my surprise we’re both along similar spiritual…
